Mold Journey
Fitness & Health • Lifestyle • Preparedness
Mold is almost ubiquitous. It constitutes part of the process of breaking down diseased and dead matter, i.e., returning dust to dust. It is opportunistic in that it thrives on moisture as well as darkness.

The Spectrum: Degeneration and Regeneration

Think of every life experience from eating to exercise, stress, and illness as a spectrum with degeneration on one end and regeneration on the other. Then, every action contributes to wear and tear or to health.

Fungi play an important role in decomposing dead organic matter. If there were no fungi – and their allies, bacteria – we would be up to the gills in trash. However, thanks to their services, dust does return to dust and even landfills and superfunds are eventually converted to soil, perhaps not nutrient dense soil but nevertheless soil. How long it takes for the transformation of rubbish, yard waste, and kitchen scraps to decompose depends on a combination of climate and composting measures in which mushrooms and mold play an important role.

On the far opposite end of the spectrum, we have foods and herbs that contribute to healing. In Ayurvedic medicine, these are classified as rasayana substances and are described as promoting longevity. As a medical philosopher, I may prefer to say regeneration as it is very difficult to prove that we have extended our lives, but we can determine whether we are healthy and living life to the fullest.

In between fungi and rasayana herbs, there are foods, medicine, and life styles that tilt us more towards one or the other end of the spectrum. Perhaps, we grab a hit and run snack that fulfills a fleeting craving without contributing to well being. The needle moves a little to the left. Maybe, we make some juice with organic vegetables and the needle moves to the right. Then, perhaps we add some ashwagandha extract and the movement goes significantly to the right.

Mold can be dormant or vegetative. When active, it can consume both dead and live material.

What is the problem here? It is that when inhaled or ingested, mold can consume blood cells and tissues. It can also secrete toxins that can lead to serious health problems. Where property is concerned, drywall, wood, and other materials become the food source. Besides the damage to property, the active mold off-gasses mycotoxins that can be deadly.

Through a combination of fortuitous circumstances and perseverance, I recovered. There are milestones in my personal saga: meeting knowledgeable individuals at propitious times, having the opportunity to observe mold in darkfield microscopy, assiduous study of the work of predecessors, and considerable knowledge of herbal medicine. Even with my background, the challenges were enormous as were the expenses and loss of momentum in life. At this juncture, others do not need to rediscover the wheel. I have it and will share everything that could possibly benefit others.
